How SkinPen microneedling works
SkinPen uses fine, sterile micro-needles to create thousands of tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These are too small to see once healed, but they are enough to prompt your skin's natural repair process, including the production of new collagen and elastin.
As that new collagen builds over the following weeks, skin becomes firmer, smoother and more refined. Because the treatment works with your own healing response, results look natural and continue to develop after each session.
What SkinPen can help with
SkinPen is used for fine lines, acne scarring, enlarged pores and uneven texture, as well as for improving firmness and radiance. It can be used on the face, neck and décolletage, and on body areas where texture or scarring is a concern.
It suits many skin types and is a good first step if you are new to skin treatments, or if you would like a gentler option than radiofrequency microneedling. If you have active acne, this will need to be settled before treatment, and your practitioner can advise on the best order of treatments.
SkinPen with PRP
SkinPen can be combined with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), made from a small sample of your own blood. The plasma is applied across the skin during and after microneedling, adding growth factors to support repair and collagen production.
SkinPen with PRP costs £300 per session or £800 for a course of three. It is a popular choice for scarring and for skin that needs extra support to renew.
Your course of treatment
A course of 3 to 6 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is usually recommended, depending on your concern. Texture and tone often respond within three sessions, while scarring may need more. A course of three SkinPen treatments is £500.

On the day
What happens at your appointment
- 01 We go through your medical history and skin concerns and confirm you are suitable.
- 02 Your skin is cleansed and numbing cream is applied to keep you comfortable.
- 03 A glide serum is applied and SkinPen is passed over the skin in sections, at depths suited to each area.
- 04 If you are having PRP, your blood sample is prepared and the plasma is applied during treatment.
- 05 Your skin is soothed and you leave with written aftercare. Expect to look flushed, as if you have caught the sun.
Safety
What you need to know before SkinPen Microneedling
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active acne with pustules or cysts in the treatment area
- Active cold sores, infection or broken skin in the treatment area
- Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) in the last six months
- A history of keloid scarring
- Uncontrolled diabetes or immunosuppressive treatment, assessed individually
Common and expected
- Redness, mild swelling and sensitivity for 24 to 72 hours
- Light flaking or dryness as the skin heals
- Occasional pinpoint bleeding during treatment
Serious risks
Infection is the main risk and is reduced by sterile, single-use needle cartridges, careful technique and following your aftercare, especially avoiding touching your face and makeup in the first 24 hours. Changes in pigmentation are possible, particularly in deeper skin tones or if the skin is exposed to sun, and are minimised by suitable depth settings and daily SPF. If you are prone to cold sores, please tell us, as treatment can trigger a flare.
Aftercare
- Avoid touching your face for the rest of the day
- No makeup for 24 hours
- Cleanse gently with water or a mild cleanser for the first 24 hours
- Avoid acids, retinoids and vitamin C for around five days
- Avoid exercise, saunas, swimming and sun exposure for 48 hours
- Wear SPF 50 every day for at least two weeks, and ideally always

Questions
Does SkinPen hurt?
Most people feel mild to moderate discomfort. Numbing cream is applied before treatment, and many describe the sensation as a light, vibrating scratch.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually 3 to 6 treatments, 4 to 6 weeks apart. A course of three is £500, which saves £25 on booking singly.
What is the downtime?
Redness, mild swelling and sensitivity usually last 24 to 72 hours, and you may have some light flaking. Makeup can go back on after 24 hours.
When will I see results?
Skin often looks brighter within a week or two. Improvements in texture, tone and scarring develop gradually over the following weeks as new collagen forms.
Should I choose SkinPen or Morpheus8 Burst?
SkinPen is ideal for general texture, tone, fine lines and many types of scarring. Morpheus8 Burst adds radiofrequency heat at several depths and is often chosen for skin laxity and deeper scarring. Your consultation will recommend the best fit.
Do I need a consultation first?
Your consultation is free and there is no obligation to go ahead. It is where we check your medical history, talk through what you would like to change, and agree a plan together.
Do you see clients from Huntingdon, St Neots and Cambridge?
Yes. Avismo is on Edison Road in St Ives, and many of our clients travel in from Huntingdon, which is roughly 15 minutes away by car, and from St Neots and Cambridge, which are around 30 minutes. We also see a lot of people from the villages around St Ives, including Hemingford Grey, Houghton, Fenstanton and Somersham. Appointments can be booked online at a time that suits your journey.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to move or cancel your appointment, so the time can be offered to someone else. Deposits and late-cancellation terms are explained when you book through our online booking system.
