What is Lumecca Peak?
Lumecca Peak is an advanced intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment designed to improve the appearance of pigmentation, sun damage, freckles, age spots and superficial vascular concerns.
At Avismo Aesthetics & Skin we use Lumecca Peak as part of a medically led approach to improving the overall appearance and health of the skin. Rather than simply treating the surface, IPL uses carefully selected wavelengths of light to target specific chromophores within the skin, including melanin and haemoglobin.
The result can be a clearer, more even-looking complexion, with less visible pigmentation and redness.
What can Lumecca Peak treat?
Lumecca Peak can address common signs of sun damage and vascular change, including sun spots and age-related pigmentation, freckles, uneven pigmentation and skin tone, sun-damaged skin, facial redness and rosacea, superficial visible vessels and certain vascular lesions.
It can be used on areas that are often exposed to the sun, including the face, neck, décolletage, hands and arms.
How Lumecca Peak works
Lumecca Peak delivers controlled pulses of light into the skin. The light is absorbed by targeted structures within the skin, which, depending on the concern, can be melanin in pigmented areas or haemoglobin in superficial blood vessels.
Treated pigment may first look darker before it gradually breaks down and is cleared by the body's natural processes. Vascular areas may also change in appearance as the targeted vessels respond to the light energy.
Lumecca Peak is designed with high peak power and shorter pulse durations to target pigmented and vascular concerns efficiently.
Is Lumecca Peak suitable for me?
A consultation is essential before treatment. IPL is not suitable for everyone, and your skin type, current skin condition, pigmentation, medications, recent sun exposure and treatment history are all considered before we recommend it.
Particular care is needed with pigmentation, because some types of pigmentation can respond unpredictably to IPL. If we feel another treatment or approach would suit your skin better, we will explain why at your consultation.
After treatment and your results
Straight after treatment the skin may look mildly red, warm or flushed, which generally settles quickly. Pigmented areas can become temporarily darker and then gradually fade or flake away over the following days.
Results are not always immediate, as the skin keeps changing while the body processes the targeted pigment and vessels. Some improvement may show after the first treatment, and a course may be recommended depending on your concerns and how your skin responds.
Sun protection is especially important when treating pigmentation and sun damage, as continued UV exposure can lead to further pigmentation.
How many treatments will I need?
It depends on what we are treating, your skin type and how your skin responds. Some concerns show a noticeable improvement after one treatment, while a course can give a more complete result.
Your plan is personalised, rather than a set number of sessions prescribed automatically.

On the day
What happens at your appointment
- 01 Your skin is cleansed and prepared, and you are given protective eyewear.
- 02 The Lumecca Peak handpiece is applied to the treatment area.
- 03 With each pulse you may feel a brief snapping or warm sensation, often compared to the flick of a small elastic band. The built-in cooling helps keep you comfortable.
- 04 Treatment is relatively quick, usually around 20 to 45 minutes depending on the area and the concern.
- 05 Afterwards the skin may look warm or flushed, and pigmented areas may darken over the next hours or days before fading.
Safety
What you need to know before Lumecca Peak IPL
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Under 18, unless a parent or guardian has given consent
- A pacemaker, internal defibrillator or any electronic implant, such as a glucose monitor
- A permanent implant in the treatment area, such as metal plates or screws, silicone implants or an injected substance
- Current or past cancer, especially skin cancer, or pre-cancerous moles
- A weakened immune system, from conditions such as HIV or AIDS or from immunosuppressant medication
- Serious health conditions, such as cancer, heart problems, epilepsy, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or liver or kidney disease
- Conditions triggered by heat, such as recurrent cold sores in the treatment area, where preventive treatment may be given first
- Any active condition in the treatment area, such as sores, psoriasis, eczema or a rash, or heavily or freshly tanned skin
- A history of skin disorders such as keloid scarring or poor wound healing, or very dry, cracked, broken, infected or fragile skin
- Tattoos, permanent make-up or pigmented marks you want to keep, which are avoided
- Any medical condition that might affect how the skin heals
- Poorly controlled hormonal conditions, such as diabetes or thyroid problems
- Surgery, an invasive or ablative procedure in the treatment area in the last 3 months, or one that has not fully healed
- Isotretinoin (Accutane or Roaccutane) taken in the last 6 months
Common and expected
- Mild redness, warmth or flushing straight after treatment, which usually settles quickly
- Pigmented spots darkening for a few days before they fade or flake away
- Temporary swelling or sensitivity
Serious risks
Although IPL is a well-established treatment, it is not without risks. Possible side effects include temporary redness, swelling, sensitivity, discomfort and temporary darkening or lightening of pigmentation. In some cases blistering, burns, changes in skin pigmentation or scarring can occur. The risk of pigmentation changes can be greater in some skin types and after recent sun exposure, which is why a thorough consultation and skin assessment come before any treatment.
Aftercare
- Avoid heat treatments, such as saunas, steam rooms, swimming and exercise, for 48 hours
- Avoid hot baths and showers for 48 hours and keep the water lukewarm
- Avoid UV from the sun or sunbeds on the treated area throughout your course and for 4 weeks after your last treatment
- Use SPF 30 or higher on any exposed areas, such as the face, throughout your course and for 4 weeks after your last treatment
- Make-up can be applied after treatment if the skin is unbroken, but not over any crusting
- Your skin may look red, feel tight or be slightly swollen for a day or so
- Pigmented spots may darken within minutes and become darker still the next day, and small blood vessels may also darken
- There may be some redness and swelling around pigmented spots and vessels, which is local inflammation
- A few days later pigmented spots may crust, then flake off after 7 to 10 days. Leave them alone and do not pick or scratch them
- Results may need more than one treatment

Questions
Is Lumecca Peak painful?
Most people tolerate IPL well. You may feel a brief heat or snapping sensation with each pulse, and the integrated cooling helps make treatment more comfortable. It varies with the area, your skin and the settings needed.
How long does a session take?
Typically around 20 to 45 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Your consultation lets us give you a more accurate time.
Is there any downtime?
Generally very little. Your skin may look red or more pigmented straight after treatment, and darker spots usually fade or flake away over the following days.
Which areas can be treated?
Areas often exposed to the sun, including the face, neck, décolletage, hands and arms.
Can IPL treat every type of pigmentation?
No. Some types of pigmentation can respond unpredictably to IPL, so we assess your skin carefully first. If another treatment would be more suitable, we will tell you.
Do I need a consultation first?
Your consultation is free and there is no obligation to go ahead. It is where we check your medical history, talk through what you would like to change, and agree a plan together.
I live in Huntingdon, St Neots or Cambridge. Is the clinic easy to reach?
Yes. Many of our clients travel in from Huntingdon, St Neots, Cambridge and the surrounding villages. The clinic is at 28 Edison Road, St Ives, PE27 3LF, about 15 minutes' drive from Huntingdon and around 30 minutes from St Neots and Cambridge, with plenty of parking on site.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to move or cancel your appointment, so the time can be offered to someone else. Deposits and late-cancellation terms are explained when you book through our online booking system.
