How PRP works
A small amount of blood is taken from your arm, much like a routine blood test. It is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma, which is rich in platelets, from the rest of the blood. Platelets carry growth factors that play a natural part in healing and repair.
That concentrated plasma is then returned to your skin, either with fine injections or through microneedling. The aim is to stimulate collagen production, improve texture and support overall skin health. Because it comes from your own blood, nothing synthetic is added.
PRP for skin, and with SkinPen microneedling
PRP for the skin is used to improve texture, fine lines, dullness and early crepiness, including on the face, neck and around the eyes. It does not add volume or lift, so it is best suited to people whose main concern is skin quality rather than facial shape.
PRP can also be combined with SkinPen microneedling. The microneedling creates tiny channels in the skin, and the plasma is applied across the treated area, so you get the collagen-stimulating effect of both. This combination costs £300 per session or £800 for a course of three.
Whichever option suits you, improvements build gradually over several weeks, and the best results are usually seen after a course of treatments.
PRP for thinning hair
PRP is also used on the scalp for people noticing thinning or weaker hair. The plasma is placed with small injections into the areas of concern, with the aim of supporting the hair follicles.
Hair loss has many causes, and PRP will not suit everyone. Your consultation includes a conversation about your history, and we may suggest you speak to your GP first if there could be an underlying medical cause that needs looking into. Results vary from person to person and cannot be guaranteed.
Who carries out your treatment
PRP at Avismo is carried out by Karen Moseley, founder of the clinic, a registered nurse since 2000 and a V300 independent nurse prescriber. Karen has worked in medical aesthetics since 2014 and holds a Level 7 qualification in aesthetic medicine.
The clinic is Save Face accredited, and many clients travel in from Huntingdon and the surrounding villages as well as from St Ives itself. Your first step is a free consultation to check PRP is right for you.

On the day
What happens at your appointment
- 01 We check your medical history, medication and suitability, and agree the area to be treated.
- 02 Numbing cream is applied to the treatment area while we take a small blood sample from your arm.
- 03 Your blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet rich plasma, which takes a few minutes.
- 04 The plasma is placed with fine injections, or applied during SkinPen microneedling if you are having the combined treatment.
- 05 Your skin is cleaned and you are given written aftercare. The appointment takes 45 to 60 minutes in total.
Safety
What you need to know before Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Blood or clotting disorders, or a low platelet count
- Blood thinning medication, assessed individually
- Active infection, cold sores or inflamed skin in the treatment area
- Active cancer or current cancer treatment
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Severe needle phobia, as a blood sample is needed
Common and expected
- Redness and swelling for 24 to 48 hours
- Bruising at the injection points or where the blood was taken
- Mild tenderness in the treated area
Serious risks
Because PRP is made from your own blood, allergic reactions are very unlikely. The main risk is infection, which is reduced by sterile technique and single-use equipment. Some people feel faint when blood is taken, so please tell us if this has happened to you before. If you take blood thinners or have a clotting condition, this is discussed at your consultation rather than on the day.
Aftercare
- Avoid touching the treated area for the rest of the day
- No makeup for 12 hours, or 24 hours after SkinPen with PRP
- Avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise, saunas and steam rooms for 24 hours
- Avoid anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen for 48 hours unless advised otherwise by your doctor, as they may dampen the healing response
- Avoid washing your hair for the rest of the day after scalp PRP
- Wear a broad-spectrum SPF every day

Questions
How many PRP treatments will I need?
Optimal results are usually seen after multiple sessions, which is why we offer a course of three. PRP for skin or hair is £650 for three, and SkinPen with PRP is £800 for three.
Does PRP hurt?
Most people feel mild discomfort during the injections or microneedling. Numbing cream is applied beforehand, and the blood sample feels like a routine blood test.
What is the downtime?
Expect some redness, swelling or bruising. Most people are back to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours.
When will I see results?
Improvements develop gradually over several weeks as your skin responds. Results vary, and a course usually gives a better outcome than a single session.
Can PRP help with hair loss?
PRP is used to support thinning hair, but it does not suit every type of hair loss. We will talk through your history at consultation and may suggest seeing your GP first if there could be an underlying cause.
Do I need a consultation first?
Your consultation is free and there is no obligation to go ahead. It is where we check your medical history, talk through what you would like to change, and agree a plan together.
Do you see clients from Huntingdon, St Neots and Cambridge?
Yes. Avismo is on Edison Road in St Ives, and many of our clients travel in from Huntingdon, which is roughly 15 minutes away by car, and from St Neots and Cambridge, which are around 30 minutes. We also see a lot of people from the villages around St Ives, including Hemingford Grey, Houghton, Fenstanton and Somersham. Appointments can be booked online at a time that suits your journey.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to move or cancel your appointment, so the time can be offered to someone else. Deposits and late-cancellation terms are explained when you book through our online booking system.
