How the Eneka PRO diode laser works
Laser hair removal works by sending light energy into the skin, where it is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. That energy turns to heat and damages the follicle, which slows and weakens future growth. Over a course of sessions, most people see a significant and long-lasting reduction in hair, which is why the correct term is permanent hair reduction rather than removal.
At Avismo we use the Eneka PRO, a 5000W medical-grade diode laser that is CE marked as a medical device. Its high power, large spot size and multiple wavelengths mean it can treat a wide range of skin tones and hair types, and larger areas such as legs and backs can be covered efficiently. A built-in cooling system keeps the tip of the handpiece cold throughout, which protects the skin and makes treatment much more comfortable.
Compared with IPL (intense pulsed light), a diode laser is generally more targeted and tends to need fewer top-up sessions. It also works on more skin types. Very fair, grey, white or red hairs have little pigment for any laser to target, so we will be honest with you at consultation if laser is unlikely to help.
Why a course of sessions is needed
Hair grows in cycles, and laser can only affect follicles that are in their active growth phase at the time of treatment. At any one moment only a proportion of your hairs are in that phase, so each session catches a new group.
For most people we recommend around six sessions, spaced four to eight weeks apart depending on the area. Facial hair usually grows back faster and is treated closer together, while legs and backs are spaced further apart. You should notice finer, slower and patchier regrowth as the course goes on.
Some people, particularly where hair growth is influenced by hormones, need occasional maintenance sessions after the course. We cannot promise the exact number you will need, but we will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation and review your progress at each visit.
More than smooth skin
Many of our clients come to us because shaving, waxing or epilating has become a daily frustration. Reducing the hair can also help with the problems that come with it: ingrown hairs, razor burn and bumps, the shadow of dark follicles showing through the skin after shaving, and rashes or breakouts caused by hair removal.
Your first appointment is a free consultation where we go through a full medical questionnaire, explain the treatment, confirm the cost for your chosen areas and give you pre and post treatment advice. We then carry out a patch test to check how your skin responds before your first full session.

On the day
What happens at your appointment
- 01 Shave the area the day before or on the morning of your appointment. Do not wax, pluck or use hair removal cream in the four weeks beforehand
- 02 Arrive with clean skin, free of creams, deodorant, fake tan or makeup over the area
- 03 We check your medical history, any new medication and recent sun exposure before we start
- 04 You and your practitioner both wear protective eyewear while the laser is in use
- 05 The cooled handpiece is passed over the area. Most people feel warmth and a light snapping or prickling sensation
- 06 There is no downtime, so you can go straight back to your day
Safety
What you need to know before laser hair removal
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- A tan, recent sun exposure or fake tan on the area to be treated
- Medication that makes the skin sensitive to light, including some antibiotics and acne treatments, assessed individually
- Active infection, broken skin, cold sores or eczema flare in the area
- A history of keloid scarring, epilepsy triggered by light, or certain skin conditions, discussed at consultation
- Tattoos or permanent makeup in the treatment area, which are avoided
Common and expected
- Redness and slight swelling around the follicles for a few hours
- Warmth or a mild sunburn-like feeling on the day
- Stubble that appears to regrow for one to two weeks as treated hairs shed
Serious risks
Less commonly, laser can cause blistering, burns or changes in skin colour, either lighter or darker patches. These are more likely on tanned skin or if aftercare is not followed, and are usually temporary. The patch test, careful settings for your skin type and the integrated cooling are there to keep this risk low. If you notice blistering, crusting or any change that worries you, contact the clinic straight away.
Aftercare
- Avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms and swimming pools for 24 to 48 hours
- No strenuous exercise for 24 hours while the skin is warm
- Apply SPF 30 or higher to treated areas that are exposed and avoid sunbathing or sunbeds throughout your course
- Do not wax, pluck or thread between sessions. Shaving is fine
- Avoid perfumed products, deodorant and exfoliants on the area for 24 hours
- Let shedding hairs fall out naturally over the next two weeks

Questions
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser gives long-lasting hair reduction rather than removing every hair for good. Most people see a marked, lasting reduction after a full course, and some need an occasional maintenance session, especially where hormones play a part.
How many sessions will I need?
We usually recommend around six sessions, four to eight weeks apart. The number varies with the area, your hair and your hormones, and we will give you an honest estimate at consultation.
Does it hurt?
Most people describe a warm, prickling or snapping sensation. The Eneka PRO has a cooling system that keeps the handpiece tip cold, which makes treatment much more comfortable. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip and bikini can feel sharper.
Can you treat my skin and hair type?
The Eneka PRO is designed to treat a wide range of skin tones and hair types. Hair with little or no pigment, such as grey, white, very fair or red hair, does not respond well to any laser, and we will tell you honestly at consultation.
Do I need a consultation and patch test?
Your consultation is free and there is no obligation to go ahead. It is where we check your medical history, talk through what you would like to change, and agree a plan together. For laser we also carry out a patch test before your first full session.
Should I shave before my appointment?
Yes, shave the area the day before or on the morning of treatment. Avoid waxing, plucking, threading or hair removal creams for four weeks beforehand, as the laser needs the root of the hair to be in place.
I live in Huntingdon, St Neots or Cambridge. Is it easy to get to you?
Yes. We are at 28 Edison Road, St Ives, PE27 3LF, and many of our clients come from Huntingdon, St Neots, Cambridge and the surrounding villages. What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to move or cancel your appointment, so the time can be offered to someone else. Deposits and late-cancellation terms are explained when you book through our online booking system.
