How CryoPen works
The CryoPen is a precise cryotherapy device that removes skin imperfections by freezing them with carefully controlled cold. A fine, pen-like applicator delivers the cold directly onto the lesion, so treatment is targeted and surrounding healthy skin is disturbed as little as possible.
Freezing destroys the cells in the treated area. Over the following days the lesion usually darkens, may form a small blister or scab, and then comes away as the skin underneath heals. There is no cutting and no stitches, and each lesion typically takes just a few minutes to treat.
Cryotherapy at Avismo is carried out by Karen or Andrea, both registered nurses, so you have a medical professional assessing your skin and advising you at every step.
What we can treat
CryoPen is commonly used for benign skin lesions, including skin tags, warts, verrucas, age spots and other harmless growths that you would simply rather not have. These are often cosmetic concerns that are not treated on the NHS.
Warts and verrucas are caused by a virus and can be stubborn. They may need three to six treatments, so we offer a package of up to three treatments to make a course more affordable. Other lesions often respond to a single session, and if a second treatment is needed, your review is free.
Very large or deep lesions, and some types of growth, are better treated in other ways. If that is the case we will tell you and suggest where to go next.
Moles and anything suspicious are checked first
Once a lesion is frozen, it cannot be sent for testing. For that reason we do not treat moles or any lesion that could be suspicious without an expert opinion first. Moles need either an assessment through our Map My Mole service, where a UK consultant dermatologist reviews images of the lesion, or a letter from your GP or dermatologist confirming it is suitable for removal.
If a lesion is changing in size, shape or colour, is bleeding, itching or crusting, or simply does not look right, we will advise you to see your GP rather than treat it. Your safety always comes before a quick removal.

Safety
What you need to know before cryotherapy
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Moles or suspicious lesions without a Map My Mole assessment or GP or dermatologist letter
- Any lesion that is changing, bleeding or undiagnosed
- Cold urticaria, cryoglobulinaemia or Raynaud's affecting the area
- Pregnancy, for elective treatment
- Poor circulation or diabetes affecting healing, assessed individually
- Broken or infected skin at the site

- Temporary redness and swelling
- A blister or scab that heals within one to two weeks
Serious risks
The most common lasting effect is a change in skin colour at the treated site, either a paler or darker mark, which is more likely in deeper skin tones and is discussed with you beforehand. Scarring is uncommon, and infection is rare if the area is kept clean and the scab is left alone. The most important risk is treating something that should have been assessed, which is why moles and suspicious lesions are always checked first.
Aftercare
- Leave any blister or scab alone and let it come away on its own
- Keep the area clean and dry for the first 48 hours
- Avoid swimming, saunas and steam rooms until the skin has healed
- Protect the area with SPF 50 for at least three months to reduce the risk of a dark mark
- Book your free review if the lesion has not fully cleared
- Contact us if the area becomes hot, increasingly painful or starts weeping

What can CryoPen remove?
Benign lesions such as skin tags, warts, verrucas, age spots and other harmless growths. We will look at each lesion before treating it.
Can you remove moles with cryotherapy?
Only after assessment. Moles need either a Map My Mole report from a UK consultant dermatologist or a letter from your GP or dermatologist before we treat them. Anything that could be suspicious is referred, not frozen.
Does it hurt?
Most people feel a mild stinging or tingling while the lesion is frozen, which settles quickly. No anaesthetic is usually needed.
How many treatments will I need?
Many lesions clear after one treatment. Some need a second, and your review is free. Warts and verrucas often need three to six treatments.
What will it look like afterwards?
The area may go red, swell slightly and form a small blister or scab. Most lesions heal within one to two weeks. Leave the scab alone and it will come away on its own.
How much does it cost?
Up to three small or medium lesions (under 6mm) is £70, with additional lesions £10 each. Up to three large lesions is £90, with additional lesions £20 each. Warts and verrucas are £80 per treatment or £150 for up to three.

What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to move or cancel your appointment, so the time can be offered to someone else. Deposits and late-cancellation terms are explained when you book through our online booking system.
