How it worksHow Radiesse works
Radiesse is made from tiny microspheres of calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in a gel. The gel gives immediate lift and volume where it is placed. Over the following weeks it is gradually absorbed, and the microspheres act as a scaffold that encourages your body to lay down new collagen.
That two-stage effect is what sets it apart from hyaluronic acid filler. You see a difference on the day, and then the result continues to develop as your own collagen builds, which is why it suits people who want structure and firmness rather than just volume.
Who it suits
Radiesse is often considered for loss of contour in the cheeks, a softening jawline or jowls, and moderate to deep lines where support has been lost. It is also used to restore volume to the backs of the hands, where thinning skin can make veins and tendons more visible.
It can be used in more diluted form to support the quality of skin on areas such as the neck and décolletage, where the aim is firmness rather than added volume. Whether that is right for you is something we will assess at consultation.
Radiesse is not suitable for every area. It is not used in the lips or around the eyes, and for some concerns a hyaluronic acid filler, Profhilo Structura or a skin treatment will be a better fit. We will talk you through the options honestly.
An important difference from hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed. Radiesse cannot be dissolved in the same way. That makes careful assessment, accurate placement and conservative amounts even more important, and it is one reason Radiesse should only ever be given by an experienced medical practitioner.
Radiesse is carried out by Karen or Lorna, both regulated healthcare professionals, and Karen is a member of the Aesthetic Complications Expert (ACE) Group. If Radiesse is not the safest choice for you, we will tell you, and suggest an alternative.
Radiesse at our St Ives clinic
Treatment takes place at our clinic on Edison Road in St Ives, which moved to larger premises in July 2025. The appointment usually takes 45 to 60 minutes, and a numbing agent can be applied to keep you comfortable.
It is a short drive from Huntingdon and the villages around St Ives, and most people go straight back to their normal day afterwards.

Safety
What you need to know before radiesse
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Active infection, cold sores or inflamed skin at the treatment site
- Known allergy to any component of the product, including lidocaine
- Bleeding disorders or a tendency to form raised scars, assessed individually
- Autoimmune conditions or immunosuppressive treatment, assessed individually
- Recent or planned dental work or vaccinations, discussed at consultation
Common and expected
- Redness, swelling and tenderness at the injection sites for a few days
- Bruising, which can take up to two weeks to fade
- Temporary firmness in the treated area as the product settles
Serious risks
As with any filler, the most serious risk is vascular occlusion, where product blocks or compresses a blood vessel. It is rare. Because Radiesse cannot be dissolved in the same way as hyaluronic acid filler, it also carries a small risk of nodules or lumps that are harder to correct. Our team follows recognised complication protocols and you are given a number to call straight away if you notice unusual pain, whitening or mottling of the skin, or any change in your vision.
Aftercare
- Avoid touching or pressing on the area for the rest of the day unless we give you specific massage instructions
- No makeup over the injection points for twelve hours
- No alcohol, strenuous exercise, saunas or steam rooms for 24 hours
- Avoid extreme heat or cold on the area until any swelling has settled
- No facials, peels or other treatments over the area for two weeks
- Contact the clinic straight away if you have any concerns

Questions
How is Radiesse different from other fillers?
Most fillers are made from hyaluronic acid and work by adding volume. Radiesse adds volume too, but it also stimulates your skin to make new collagen, so results continue to develop for several weeks after treatment.
How long do results last?
Typically 12 to 18 months, although this varies from person to person.
Can Radiesse be dissolved?
Not in the same way as hyaluronic acid filler. This is why we take particular care over who it is suitable for, where it is placed and how much is used.
Can it be used on my hands?
Yes, the backs of the hands are one of the areas Radiesse is used for. We will assess your hands at consultation.
Does it hurt?
You may feel mild discomfort during the injections. A numbing agent can be applied beforehand to help.
Do I need a consultation first?
Your consultation is free and there is no obligation to go ahead. It is where we check your medical history, talk through what you would like to change, and agree a plan together.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to move or cancel your appointment, so the time can be offered to someone else. Deposits and late-cancellation terms are explained when you book through our online booking system.
