What dermaplaning does
Over time, dead skin cells collect on the surface of your skin and trap oil and debris along with the fine, soft hairs that grow across most faces. Together they can make skin look dull and feel slightly rough, and they give makeup something to cling to. Dermaplaning removes that surface layer in one careful, controlled treatment.
Using a sterile single-use blade held at a shallow angle, your practitioner works across the skin in short, light strokes. It is a precise, hands-on treatment and needs no anaesthetic. Most people find it relaxing and are surprised by how smooth their skin feels straight away.
Because the barrier of dead cells and hair has gone, serums and moisturisers are able to reach the skin more easily. Many people also find that foundation goes on more smoothly and looks more natural afterwards.
Is dermaplaning right for you?
Dermaplaning suits most skin types and is a popular choice before an event, as a regular part of a skincare routine, or simply when your skin needs a lift. It is particularly helpful if you notice dullness, a rough texture, or visible facial hair that catches the light under makeup.
It is not usually the right treatment when you have active, inflamed breakouts, as passing a blade over them can irritate the skin and spread bacteria. In that case we may suggest treating the breakouts first, with a peel, a Profacial or a ZO Skin Health home programme, and coming back to dermaplaning once things have settled.
A common worry is that the hair will grow back thicker or darker. It will not. The fine vellus hair on the face is cut at the surface, not changed at the root, so it grows back just as it was.
Dermaplaning with other treatments
Dermaplaning is one of the most useful add-ons at the clinic. On its own it costs £50, or £30 when you add it to another treatment. With the surface build-up cleared, a chemical peel can penetrate more evenly, so the two are often booked together.
It also pairs well with Dermalux Flex LED, which can be added for £30, for a calm, glowing finish, and it makes a good first step before a Profacial hydrofacial. What happens at your appointment
- 01 We check your medical history and look at your skin to make sure dermaplaning is suitable today.
- 02 Your skin is thoroughly cleansed and dried so the blade glides evenly.
- 03 Your practitioner holds the skin taut and uses light, short strokes to remove dead skin and fine hair.
- 04 If you have booked a peel or LED alongside, it follows straight after.
- 05 We finish with a soothing moisturiser and sun protection, and talk through your aftercare.
Safety
What you need to know before dermaplaning
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Active, inflamed acne or pustules in the treatment area
- Cold sores, broken skin or infection
- Isotretinoin (Roaccutane) within the last six months
- Sunburn or very sensitive, reactive skin on the day
- Recent use of retinoids or exfoliating acids, which may need pausing beforehand
- Blood-thinning medication or skin conditions such as active eczema or psoriasis, assessed individually
Common and expected
- Slight redness or pinkness for a few hours
- A temporary feeling of sensitivity, especially if you have a peel at the same time
Serious risks
Dermaplaning is a low-risk treatment when carried out by a trained practitioner. Small nicks are uncommon and heal quickly. Infection or a flare of breakouts is rare and is reduced by treating only calm, healthy skin with a sterile single-use blade. Contact the clinic if you notice anything unusual afterwards.
Aftercare
- Apply a broad spectrum SPF 50 every day, as freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to the sun
- Avoid makeup for the rest of the day if you can, to let your skin breathe
- Skip retinoids, acids and scrubs for a few days
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms, swimming and heavy exercise for 24 hours
- Keep your skin well moisturised with gentle products

Questions
Will my facial hair grow back thicker?
No. Dermaplaning cuts the fine vellus hair at the surface and does not affect the hair follicle, so the hair grows back with the same texture and colour as before.
Does dermaplaning hurt?
It is generally very well tolerated and needs no anaesthetic. Most people describe a light scraping sensation and find the treatment relaxing.
How often can I have dermaplaning?
Most people book every three to four weeks, in line with the skin's natural renewal cycle. We will suggest what suits your skin.
Can I wear makeup afterwards?
It is best to give your skin the rest of the day off if you can. After that, you will probably find your makeup goes on more smoothly than before.
How much does it cost?
Dermaplaning is £50 as a treatment on its own, or £30 when you add it to another treatment such as a chemical peel.
Can I have dermaplaning if I have acne?
Not over active, inflamed breakouts. We will look at your skin first and may suggest treating the breakouts before dermaplaning. Your consultation is free and there is no obligation to go ahead. It is where we check your medical history, talk through what you would like to change, and agree a plan together.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to move or cancel your appointment, so the time can be offered to someone else. Deposits and late-cancellation terms are explained when you book through our online booking system.

Yes. Many of our clients travel in from Huntingdon, St Neots, Cambridge and the surrounding villages. The clinic is at 28 Edison Road, St Ives, PE27 3LF, about 15 minutes' drive from Huntingdon and around 30 minutes from St Neots and Cambridge.
