A dermatologist's opinion without the long wait
Map My Mole is a service designed by dermatologists to meet the growing demand for skin lesion checks. Avismo is a clinic partner, which means we can give you access to an opinion from a UK consultant dermatologist, usually within 24 to 48 hours.
Many people have a mole they would like checked but find it hard to get a GP appointment, or simply want reassurance sooner. This service gives you a clear, written report from a specialist, and if anything needs further investigation, that report can be taken to your GP to help speed up a referral.
It is also the first step if you would like a mole or lesion removed in clinic. We do not remove moles without an expert opinion first.
How it works
You start with an appointment at our St Ives clinic. We talk through your concerns and any changes you have noticed, then examine the mole or lesion with a dermoscope, a handheld device that magnifies the skin and shows detail that cannot be seen with the naked eye. We take high-quality dermoscopic and overview images.
Those images are then submitted securely to Map My Mole, where they are reviewed by one of their consultant dermatologists. Within 24 to 48 hours you receive a report explaining what the dermatologist has seen and what they recommend.
The report will tell you whether the lesion looks suitable for removal in clinic, for example with cryotherapy, or whether it needs further investigation with your GP. If the dermatologist is concerned, they will say so clearly and the report can be sent to your GP.
What a mole check can and cannot do
A Map My Mole check is a screening service. Our nurses take the images and look after you, but they do not diagnose. The opinion on your lesion comes from the consultant dermatologist, based on the images and information provided. It is not a full-body skin examination, and only the lesions submitted are reviewed.
If a lesion is changing quickly, bleeding, or you are worried about it, please do not wait for an appointment with us. Contact your GP or NHS 111. Keep checking your skin regularly, and seek advice if a mole changes in size, shape or colour, or develops new symptoms, even if it has been checked before.

Safety
What you need to know before Map My Mole
Every treatment carries risk. Nothing here replaces the consultation, where all of this is discussed with you before you consent to anything.
Not suitable if
- Lesions that are rapidly changing, bleeding or ulcerated, which should be seen by your GP urgently
- Lesions in areas that cannot be clearly photographed, discussed at your appointment
- Anyone looking for a full-body skin examination, which this service does not replace

Serious risks
The main limitation of any remote review is that it is based only on the images and information provided. A dermatologist may occasionally recommend that a lesion is seen in person or checked again after a period of time. A reassuring report is not a guarantee for the future, so keep watching your skin and seek medical advice if anything changes.
Aftercare
- Read your report carefully and follow its recommendations
- If further investigation is advised, send or take your report to your GP promptly
- If removal is suitable, we can talk you through cryotherapy and book you in
- Check your skin monthly and photograph moles you want to keep an eye on
- Use SPF 30 or higher daily and avoid sunburn and sunbeds
- Seek advice if a mole changes in size, shape or colour, or starts to itch or bleed

Questions
What is Map My Mole?
A service designed by dermatologists that lets clinics like ours send images of moles and skin lesions to UK consultant dermatologists for an expert opinion, usually within 24 to 48 hours.
Will the nurse tell me if my mole is cancer?
No. Our nurses examine the lesion and take the images, but they do not diagnose. The opinion comes from the consultant dermatologist in your written report. If anything is concerning, the report will say so and can be sent to your GP.
How much does it cost?
£70 for the first lesion and £20 for each additional lesion checked at the same appointment, including the dermatologist review and report.
How quickly will I get my report?
Your report is usually sent within 24 to 48 hours of your images being submitted.
Can you remove my mole afterwards?
If the dermatologist's report says the lesion is suitable for removal in clinic, we can discuss cryotherapy with you. If further investigation is needed, you will be advised to see your GP instead.
Should I see my GP instead?
If a mole is changing quickly, bleeding, or you are very worried about it, please contact your GP or NHS 111 straight away. Map My Mole is a useful option when you want a specialist opinion sooner, but it does not replace your GP.

Yes. We are at 28 Edison Road, St Ives, PE27 3LF, and many of our clients come from Huntingdon, St Neots, Cambridge and the surrounding villages. What is your cancellation policy?
Please give at least 48 hours notice if you need to move or cancel your appointment, so the time can be offered to someone else. Deposits and late-cancellation terms are explained when you book through our online booking system.
